When getting a book publsihed the big one ar not likely to look at what you have unless you have an agent. If the book is non fiction which it normally is, the puplisher may just take a quick look at it. But this doesn’t mean you should run out and get an agent today if you have just written your first book publishing your book can happen the first time round if you use a smaller publisher.
The best choice for first time autrhors are medium to small publishers, with a smaller publisher it is possible to get your work looked at with out having an agent. But the obviously the benefit of an agent is that they will do all the hard work when publishing your book, but the for a fee of course. If you dont have one you will have to do your own research towards publishing your book. You have to decide how you will be sending out your work to publsihers and make call to the ones you send it to, to follow up on.
Hopefully if they like what you have written the books chance of success will ride soley on merit (which how well its written, this includes subject matter and other things etc..)
You will have to document all the activity that you do, when sending out your work to publishers such as the day you sent it, and the response that you got from the them. Remember if you send you writing to 30 or so publishers, if they all get back to you 4 times thats 120 times, so it is a good idea to write down times and dates so you can refer back to them for future reference.

You will have to go to the bookstore and make sure that it is a commercial one. Then you have to look through all the sections of the store and find where there are books similar toy yours. Once you have found a book like yours, you should then look on the spine so you can find out who the publisher is. This is a good strategy because the same publisher is likely to be interested in your book, and best of all they will be familiar with your market place. These publishers should be part of the ones that you send your book to.
Tip number two
The next place that you have that you can go is the library, its can be any university will suffice. Now you should look through all the reference books, the most current editions. You can find a section such as writers marketplace, which will list all the publishers that are in the country, you may also find out what sort of books they publish. Then you can get the details such as phone numbers and addresses. The references will normally be divided so you can got the part that is related to you book. You can leave out the sections that dont relate to your book.
The next book that you can look up is Literary Marketplace Place (LMP) it is the same sort of method that you used before but it is a little different because it is organised for the publishers themselves rather than you the writer.
